Bethel Baptist Church
PROFILE
Bethel Baptist Church, East was organized by men and women who relied on their faith in God and themselves. They put their faith to work and challenged themselves to courageously move ahead with God’s guidance.
In 1920, in the home of one of its faithful organizers, the church was organized and named Bethel Baptist Church, East. The original location of the church was in an area known as “Black Bottom.” The church worshiped in several locations in the early years, including several store fronts.
In 1954, as a result of the Urban Redevelopment Program, the City of Detroit purchased the church property. The church used the funds to purchase and relocate to a small white frame church building on the eastside of Detroit. The next year the church purchased a single family home next door to the newly purchased church building. The church continues to serve in the same community for over 63 years.
In February 1961, the church called a visionary Pastor in the person of Dr. Carl D. Hughes. Under Pastor Hughes’ leadership, the structures purchased in the 1950’s were razed and two new structures were built in 1970, and a sanctuary in 1975. Both of which are still being used today.
The members of Bethel, East are warm, loving, friendly Christians. They are eager to join in to work on projects that glorify God and enhance the ministry of the Church. Like many churches most of the leadership is over the age of 50. However, we are constantly seeking to train and employ youthful workers for Christ.
The church is located on the eastside of Detroit, in a neighborhood filled with children. It is a working-class community that is ripe with evangelistic opportunities.
Worship
Worship is the centerpiece of our fellowship. We assemble ourselves together first and foremost because God is worthy to be praised. We are to give Him glory for who He is and how He has revealed Himself to us as Creator, Redeemer, Savior, Friend, and so much more. When we bless His name, in one accord, believing in Him, and celebrating His goodness, He blesses us. We envision worship that is rich in biblical tradition and spiritual disciplines.
Our church welcomes many different forms and methods of worship. While we may consider ourselves to be a traditional baptist church, we accept and recognize that any sincere form of praise and worship that is intended to lift Him up, pleases Him.
Over the years Bethel, East has been engaged in a variety of ministries that gives honor and glory to His name. (See our Ministry Highlights page)
Summary
We believe that the church is meant to be a body building Fellowship. It is here that believers are admonished to love one another, edify each other, share each others’ joys and sorrows. Each member is part of a family made possible by Christ adopting believers as His own and giving them His name.
All in all, we pray that Bethel Baptist Church, East, will continue to share a vision for the church that is Ministry Minded. The scriptures say, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Our Lord was about meeting needs, giving service to the glory of God. He was passionate about souls being saved, about lives being changed, and relationships being healed. We will seek to review and examine our work in light of the commission given the church to do likewise.
